A TRIBUTE TO AMENTOR IN JOURNALISM PROFESSION

A TRIBUTE TO HAJIYA LAMI MACCIDO
First Hausa News Caster on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA),Artv and Radio kano.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.

With a heart weighed down by grief and shock, I received the painful news of the passing of our revered mentor, a mother to many, a trailblazer, and a true professional .Hajiya Lami Maccido, the first Hausa news caster on Nigerian Television Authority.

Her death came to me as a rude shock. Just last week, I saw her comforting comments on my Facebook page following my posts. Never did I imagine that those kind words would be among the last connections I would have with this great icon. Allah’s will is supreme.

As I reflect on my personal encounter with her during a Veteran Journalists’ Meeting, tears fill my eyes. She looked at me warmly and said:

“Bahijja, you are a good girl. As young as you are, you are making us proud.” 🥲

Surprised, I replied playfully,

“Ah ah Mama, dama kin sanni?” (Oh, so you know me already?)

She smiled gently and answered,

“Yes, I know you well. Kece dai baki san na sanki ba. Allah ya ƙara miki albarka da jagora a kan mulkinki. Keep it up.”

We both laughed.

That moment will forever remain engraved in my heart. Her words were not just compliments they were prayers, encouragement, and a mantle of responsibility placed upon my shoulders.

Hajiya Lami Maccido was a woman of peace. Kindness was her fashion. Professionalism was her identity. She carried herself with dignity, wisdom, and motherly affection. Kano State and indeed Nigeria have lost a giant in the pen profession. We, the upcoming journalists, have lost a mentor, a guide, and a reservoir of experience and noble ideas.

As the current Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kano State Chapter, I, Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, feel this loss not only personally but professionally. She was a pillar for women in journalism and an inspiration to generations.

Ya Rabb, forgive her shortcomings, expand her grave, illuminate it with Your mercy, and grant her Jannatul Firdaus as her final abode. May Allah reward her for every life she inspired, every truth she broadcast, and every young journalist she encouraged.

Ameen Ya Rabbil Alameen.

Signed:
Sayyida Bahijja Malam kabara( Small But Mighty).
